In Uganda, poverty is threatening the country’s oldest and largest National Park; Murchison Falls.

Families living around the park are struggling to live. Food is scarce and income opportunities are extremely rare.

With limited sources of food or income, some people lay traps in the hope of catching bushmeat to feed their families, and sell in the local markets. But traps are indiscriminate and wildlife such as the endangered Rothschild’s Giraffe are getting caught instead, becoming maimed or even killed.

There must be a better way.

Through a partnership between Send a Cow and Tusk, the Living with Wildlife Appeal has raised funds to upskill local communities, creating new livelihood opportunities which can lift people out of poverty and protect wildlife. The funds raised will also fund vital conservation work so that local communities appreciate the wildlife and become guardians of Murchison Falls National Park.

The UK government will match all public donations that were given to the Living with Wildlife appeal between 15 January and 14 April 2020. Donations received to the appeal will help vulnerable people and wildlife living in Uganda, as well as supporting other similar work across Africa.

Send a Cow

Every day families face poverty that is extreme, cruel, and worst of all – unnecessary. But rural Africa is rich with opportunity and where there is land, there is hope.

Send a Cow doesn’t impose solutions, we help grow them from within. That’s why they work. Our African-designed solutions were developed with, and for, the communities we support. Families get back the skills and confidence they need to get the most from their land, so they can grow enough food, earn a living and go after their dreams.

And because the families we work with pass on what they know, success quickly multiplies, from family to family, community to community, generation to generation.

We’ve been working on the ground with rural African communities since 1988 and are proud to have established country programmes in Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia. We helped 769,000 people to transform their own lives just last year. Working across six African countries, we speak many languages. But in all of them, Send a Cow has come to mean a better future.

The countries we work in are rich in natural resources and have young populations, full of innovative ideas. We want to make sure that, as Africa grows, its rural poor are not marginalised and no one gets left behind.

Tusk and the Uganda Conservation Foundation

For thirty years, Tusk has supported forward-thinking and successful conservation work in Africa. Under the patronage of HRH The Duke of Cambridge, Tusk partners with Africa’s leading and emerging conservationists to protect endangered species, reduce human-wildlife conflict, find sustainable solutions to preserve critical habitats and combat the global demand for illegal wildlife products.

Tusk has helped pioneer an impressive range of successful conservation initiatives across more than 20 countries, increasing vital protection for over 10 million acres of land and more than 40 threatened species.  From the savannahs of Kenya to the deserts of Namibia, we’re working towards a future in which people and wildlife can thrive across the African continent.

Tusk’s partner delivering the project within Uganda is the Uganda Conservation Foundation (UCF), whose mission is to safeguard Uganda’s wildlife for future generations. UCF operates in five protected areas and has run lasting projects with Tusk, Uganda Wildlife Authority, and other partners in Uganda since 2001. This includes the protection and recovery of Murchison Falls National Park, which the Living With Wildlife Appeal will build on.
